As someone who gets tanned easily, you must be curious about how a suntan or sunburn happens.
The process is quite simple.
All you’ve got to know is that ultraviolet rays are the catalysts and a skin pigment called melanin does the rest of the job!
Didn’t quite get it? Here’s the process of tanning explained in an easy way:
Tanning takes place on the skin's outermost layer, the epidermis that contains special cells called melanocytes. When you expose your skin to ultraviolet B radiation, melanocytes produce melanin and when exposed to ultraviolet A, melanin oxidizes or darkens. This darkening of your skin or tanning is a way in which your skin protects itself against too much UV light.
A tan is acquired gradually, depending on your exposure to UV rays. However, a sunburn occurs when a lot of UV light reaches your skin and damages the blood vessels near its surface.
Now that’s not all folks for tanning 101.
